Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder Reviews

Yankee Flipper

I have owned this feeder myself for over five years. It hangs on a second story deck that is 15 feet off the ground so only the most daring squirrels will attempt to conquer it. To this day I have yet see a squirrel win the yankee flipper battle. I do know it's possible based on videos I've seen online of the smartest squirrels out there but regardless of whether they win or lose this feeder proves to keep it very entertaining.

Pros:
  • The battery only needs to be recharged about once a year
  • I've owned this feeder and it's going on it's 4th year of harsh midwest summers and winters and I still have not had to maintain it.

Cons:
  • By the time the battery needs to be charged you might forget where you put the charger!
  • Several very large heavy birds might be too heavy for the perch and cause it to spin.

Squirrel Buster

Very popular alternative to the Yankee Flipper. When weight is applied it closes off the seed feeding ports so nothing can be eaten.

Pros:
  • Less expensive than yankee flipper
  • No battery to charge or maintain
  • Customer Service is said to be top notch
  • Easy to refill and clean
  • Very effective at deterring squirrels

Cons:
  • Some birds are rumored to not take too well to the feeder but I suppose to each his own so yours may do fine
  • Several very large heavy birds might be too heavy for the perch and cause it to spin
  • Some say that it leaks food more than it should and needs refilled often

Caged feeder that squirrels can't fit into.

Pros:
  • Small and inexpensive
  • Good alternative to regular seed
  • Weatherproof

Cons:
  • Small squirrels can fit into the cage
  • Birds have been rumored to get stuck inside the feeder due to a gap above the inner cage

Roamwild Pest Off Squirrel Proof Feeder

This feeder has been reengineered over the years based on customer feedback.  It now is made entirely of metal which prevents the squirrels from chewing it up.  This was a big problem and has lowered the review average on amazon.

Pros:
  • Squirrel-proof
  • Less Expensive than the others

Cons:
  • Has short perches for cardinals and larger birds. Some have had success in attaching a piece of cut straw to the existing ones to circumvent this shortcoming.
  • Filling is a bit inconvenient but not terrible
  • Cleaning is difficult

Kaytee Seed

Don't forget the food! This is the best selling one around and doesn't have any of the cruddy millet filler in it.
